Urge Congress to defend the right to asylum

TAKE ACTION [link removed]

Dear John,

People seeking safety and refuge in the U.S. should be welcomed with dignity and compassion—not turned away. But since 2020, a federal policy known as Title 42 has blocked migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to seek asylum, a human right.

The Biden administration has tried to end this inhumane policy. But some members of Congress are trying to pass legislation to keep Title 42 in place for years to come. Critical votes on Title 42 are expected in the coming weeks. That’s why elected officials need to hear from us now.

Will you join us in contacting Congress today? [link removed] This week, AFSC joins faith groups and communities across the country in demanding Congress support the right to asylum and polices that heal—not harm—individuals.

Here are two ways you can take action right now to restore asylum:

1. Email your members of Congress. [link removed]
Tell your senators and representative to defend the right to asylum—and oppose any legislation that continues Title 42!

2. Call your elected officials.
Take a few minutes and use our guide below:

Call the Congressional Switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Ask the operator to transfer you to your elected official’s office. If you’d like, you can look up your members of Congress here [link removed] .

Here’s a script you can use or adapt:
“Hello, my name is [NAME]. As your constituent, I am calling because I’m extremely concerned about migrants having the right to seek asylum and being stopped by inhumane polices like Title 42. I urge you to vote NO on any legislation that includes Title 42—and instead vote to restore the right to asylum.”

Once you finish, place two more calls to reach both your senators and representative.

Thank you for joining us in advocating for asylum—and the rights and dignity of all people.

In peace,

Imani Cruz
