[email protected] CSVANW Kicks Off 5th Annual Little One Holiday Book Drive For Children and their Families in Domestic Violence Shelter ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – December 10, 2019 – The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) kicks off their 5th Annual Little One Holiday Book Drive to help Native children and their families in domestic violence shelters cope through cultural connections and storytelling. Each year, CSVANW’s Holiday Book Drive serves to benefit children who will spend the holidays in a shelter due to domestic violence. Since its inception, CSVANW has raised more than 700 new Native American-themed books for domestic violence shelters throughout New Mexico. It’s been found that children who witness violence in their homes may exhibit adjustment difficulties. “These children also often have lower self-esteem and are prone to anxiousness, worry and fear. Reading provides a safe escape for them and an opportunity for connection, and providing books for children and their families helps create a sense of normalcy,” says Angel Charley, CSVANW Interim Executive Director. This year, CSVANW is proudly partnering with the Southwestern Associated for Indian Arts (SWAIA) to hold CSVANW’s Little One Holiday Book Drive at their 2019 Winter Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the historic La Fonda Hotel on Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th, 2019. “Over the summer SWAIA had the honor of working with the CSVANW on a fundraiser for their important work. Now we are thrilled to partner again by helping with their Little One Holiday Book Drive at our Winter Indian Market. We hope our visitors will take advantage of this fantastic way to help Native youth this holiday season,” said Amanda Crockers, Interim Co-Director of SWAIA. Visitors are encouraged to bring children’s books, Native themed preferred but not required, with them to make a book donation to the CSVANW at the Winter Indian Market. CSVANW will also accept new book donations at their office, 4600 Montgomery Blvd NE Ste B202, Albuquerque, NM, or to make a monetary donation on their website HERE. The Little One Holiday Book Drive will operate now through December 20 2019. # # # About the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women CSVANW is a member-driven tribal coalition that represents the broadest and most unified voice in advocating and collectively addressing violence against Native women and children across the region.
