Twelve years ago, on July 28, 2010, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution affirming that water and sanitation are fundamental human rights. Yet millions of households in the United States can’t afford safe water for basic everyday needs.
Water rates have skyrocketed across the country for years due to increased corporate privatization of water systems, aging infrastructure, climate change and the loss of federal funding. Our water infrastructure is decaying due to underinvestment, leaving many without access to clean water.
We know that industries like fossil fuels and bottled water are diverting and polluting our water supplies. The United Nations warns that two-thirds of the global population could live in water-stressed countries in just a few years. We’re already seeing this with a severe drought in the Western United States.
Food & Water Action is fighting to pass legislation like the WATER Act to make sure our water infrastructure is funded. And we’re fighting large agriculture companies to stop factory farms from poisoning our waterways.
Food & Water Action and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Watch, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
