LDAD is honored to announce a $40,000 matching gift opportunity from Boston lawyer Barbara Schmitt!
In discussing this gift, Barbara emphasized her view that defending democracy is an obligation of all members of the bar, noting:
“Practicing law has been a great privilege in my life, but it is one that comes with a great responsibility. I firmly believe it is our job, as lawyers, to defend the Constitution and the system of American democracy."
Emphasizing the importance of accountability, she added:
“We must call to task those lawyers and elected officials who are trying to subvert the system. Lawyers and others are free to advocate zealously for their positions — but they are not free to try to undermine and twist the system to achieve their ends.”
Barbara retired from the practice of law in 2020 while as a partner at the Boston firm of Dain Torpy; she had previously practiced at Goulston & Storrs for nearly 30 years.
Barbara was motivated to act by LDAD's Democracy Commitment, accountability work against lawyers perpetuating the Big Lie, and our many calls-to-action, such as our recent statement addressing the Supreme Court’s dangerous reasoning in its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
