On Wednesday, August 3, you are invited to join Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil for the next installment of our Policy Spotlight series, featuring Robert M. Califf, M.D., the Biden appointed Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This will be a free event that is open to all.

As the top official of the FDA, Dr. Califf is oversees programs and policies that to protect and promote the public health. Previously, Dr. Califf served as Commissioner of Food and Drugs from February 2016 to January 2017, and as the FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco.

Prior to rejoining the FDA, Dr. Califf was head of medical strategy and Senior Advisor at Alphabet Inc., contributing to strategy and policy for its health subsidiaries Verily Life Sciences and Google Health.

Earlier, Dr. Califf was a professor of medicine and vice chancellor for clinical and translational research at Duke University, director of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute and the Duke Clinical Research Institute.

At Duke, he was a frequent Health Affairs contributor, and in 2017 was a co-author of "Seven Former FDA Commissioners: The FDA Should Be An Independent Federal Agency."
