Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched through Madrid’s city center Friday night in a massive climate demonstration led by indigenous leaders and youth activists.
Democracy Now! was there in the streets.
We spoke to Godwin Ojo, a climate activist from Nigeria, who said, "We are here to stop corporate capture of the state, corporate capture of the United Nations, corporate capture of resources. And we want to make the voices of local communities count, and to put an end to climate change."
If reporting from the front lines of today's most pressing issues is important to you, please give to Democracy Now! today, when your gift will go three times as far.

Democracy Now! also filmed two young siblings—a brother and sister, Kiwi and Zozo, aged 11 and 8—who rappelled down a bridge, dangling 50 feet in the air over scores of shocked protestors below. They carefully unfurled a banner that read, "Just 8 years till 1.5° C. HOW DARE YOU?"
Although the climbing kids are just beginning to learn English, Kiwi told Democracy Now!, "In eight years, the CO2 budget for 1.5 degrees will be used up. In just eight years. What we need is massive action to stop the climate crisis. And we need it now," he said. "What we see here at the climate summit is a lot of nice talking but no real action. With every delay, there will be more people dying and more ecosystems collapsing. How dare you?"

Democracy Now! is different because when we cover the impacts of climate change—like killer hurricanes or drought-fueled wildfires—we aren't funded by the oil, gas, coal and nuclear companies.
When Democracy Now! covers war, from the U.S.-backed, Saudi-led bombing of Yemen to the war in Afghanistan—the longest war in U.S. history—we aren't sponsored by the weapons manufacturers.
Democracy Now! is supported by you. And just like you count on our news hour every day, we're counting on you to make it possible.
With your help, Democracy Now! is training the next generation of independent journalists through our internship and fellowship programs. Our LEED platinum studio—the greenest in the country—serves as a classroom for more than 1,000 students who visit each year to view live broadcasts and participate in media workshops.
All of this is only possible with your financial support.
