While gun manufacturers make billions, my kids worry if they’re safe at school.
There are simple steps gun manufacturers can take to secure firearms and reduce up to 40% of accidental gun violence deaths—like equipping guns with fingerprint technology so that guns can only be used by their intended owner. It’s the same technology we use on our phones.
In today’s Oversight Committee hearing I asked gun manufacturer CEOs if they would commit to adding this fingerprint technology to their firearms. They all refused.
Our government’s job is to oversee and regulate industries so that Americans are safe and healthy. That’s why we recall everything from lettuce to treadmills. But as thousands of people die because of gun violence, gun manufacturers like the ones I questioned today are making record profits.
The manufacturer of the gun used in the Uvalde shooting made $120 million in revenue last year–three times what they made in 2019.
Earlier this summer I was proud to vote for bipartisan legislation to better regulate ghost guns and ban high capacity magazines. But there’s clearly more to be done, and I’m hopeful that this week the House will vote to ban semi-automatic weapons.
It’s time to stand up to the gun lobby and put people’s lives ahead of profit.
