Dear Friend,

Pornography’s negative influence on the lives of those who watch—as well as those used to make it—cannot be understated. The pornography industry is built on the exploitation and abuse of women, children, and men, and NCOSE has dedicated one of our core objectives to dismantling the systems and structures that support this exploitative industry.

How are we accomplishing this herculean task?

Litigation

Just like the tobacco industry, we believe in the power of the courts to recognize the harm being done and establish legal standards that hold those who perpetuate these harms accountable. That’s why the NCOSE Law Center is bringing the online pornography titan Pornhub and its parent company MindGeek to court on behalf of brave survivors of child sex trafficking whose abuse was published and monetized by this corporation. Our groundbreaking decision has begun a tidal wave of litigation against the online pornography industry as a whole! Read more about the case and how you can support our campaign to #DismantlePornhub here.

Legislative Policy

One way to stop the pornography industry is to prevent harmful content from ever appearing before the most vulnerable targets: children. Already many states are drafting and adopting device filter bills which would require manufacturers to default filters and child safety protocols to “On” at activation of all smart devices. The filters can then be removed by parents and adults at any time with a passcode, if needed, in contrast with parents and guardians struggling to locate and turn on these filters themselves in the current reality. Utah is the first state of many to pass this critical legislation, and we need your support to introduce similar bills in your state! Learn more about how you can get involved in filtering legislation and advocacy here.

Research

The NCOSE Research Institute is working to shift conversations to the negative public health impacts of pornography by convening academics and experts from diverse fields of study, gathering and synthesizing reliable studies, and attracting public attention to harms correlated to pornography – and we are regularly updating our site with the latest research in an easy-to-understand format with our Research Spotlights! Read this summary on how pornography is similar to substance addictions and share with your network so everyone can learn the truth about pornography.

Training

We want everyone to understand the harm pornography perpetuates so that everyone has the chance to do something about it! That’s why NCOSE regularly holds trainings for advocates and lawmakers who have the power to enact policies and laws that not only protect survivors, but prevent future victims. In June, NCOSE held a National Symposium at the U.S. Capitol titled "Child Sexual Abuse, Sex Trafficking, and the Pornography Industry: Toxic Online Criminality." Watch the recording of the event livestream here to learn how Congress can help curb online sexual exploitation with practical policy solutions.

Corporate Advocacy

Corporations play a big role in propping up the pornography industry through advertising, distribution, consumer services, and technology, and we are working hard to ensure these companies understand their responsibility to place people over profits. We’ve seen some significant wins this year already: Roku, a leading media streaming company, finally cut ties with pornography platforms, including Pornhub, after years of advocacy from NCOSE and supporters like you! But we still need your help to target the rest of Pornhub’s advertisers by taking action here!

Pornography does not have room to exist in a world that truly believes in human love, connection, and equality. Thank you for continuing to fight for that world with us!
