Dear John,

Next Wednesday, August 3, we're hosting a virtual Policy Spotlight event

with FDA Commissioner Robert Califf. You are invited to join us next
week at 1:30 PM ET, and you can register to attend here
.

Food Insecurity And Diabetes

Food insecurity is more common among people with diabetes, and "the
limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe
foods" can affect diabetes management.

Despite this relationship, the associations between food insecurity and
nonclinical diabetes outcomes have not been well-characterized.

In the July Issue, Joshua Weinstein and coauthors explore the
association between food insecurity, health-related missed workdays, and
overnight hospitalizations
.

The authors find that experiencing food insecurity is associated with
increased odds of reporting any health-related missed workdays and
increased odds of overnight hospitalization within the prior twelve
months

Weinstein and coauthors' findings demonstrate that "food insecurity
may have significant effects on the day-to-day management of and
experiences of living with diabetes that are not entirely 'seen'
within the health care system; thus these effects might not be entirely
captured by measures of health care use."

The authors recommend that future policy approaches address the social
circumstances, such as food insecurity, that affect the health of
individuals with diabetes.
