The stakes are just too high. We know the single best thing we can do for Wisconsin, and for America, is to beat Ron Johnson, and that must start now.
I have said since the first day that I got into this race I wanted to run a positive campaign that focused on why vote for me and not why not one of our primary opponents.
I am proud of the statewide campaign we built and the way we did it. We built a strong team, grounded in support from our friends in organized labor and working people from all 72 counties. We became the first statewide campaign ever in Wisconsin to have a unionized staff.
We lived out our values and spent the last 18 months talking about the issues that mattered to Wisconsinites and the ways that we could make their lives better.
Because of all of this, even though we started this campaign at essentially zero — we built a deep well of support that grew into a strong second place in the polls.
But it’s become clear in the last few weeks that Wisconsin voters have decided that they want Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes to be our Democratic nominee for US Senate.
When the Lt. Governor got into the race, I welcomed him to the race as someone who has been my friend and someone I have supported in the past. And now, after a year of running against one another, I am proud to still call Mandela my friend, and in a few months, I will be proud to call him Senator Mandela Barnes.
The primary is two weeks away, but we, as a party, cannot wait. The problem with late primaries is that it often leaves the winning candidate out of money and with a fractured party.
We cannot allow that to happen.
Today, I am ending my campaign and endorsing my friend, Mandela Barnes, to be the next great Senator from the State of Wisconsin.
I’m calling for all Wisconsin Democrats to come together now behind Mandela and make sure we have a laser focus on beating Ron Johnson and reelecting Governor Tony Evers this November.
