Hi y'all,
It's been an eventful month. From the right-wing Supreme Court's disgusting, violent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, to our own City Council and Mayor redoubling their efforts to surveil the people of New Orleans, there's a lot to be angry about. And a lot to fight for.
On June 25th, we had our annual chapter convention -- our first ever in a hybrid format. We had more than 70 attendees, nearly evenly split between Zoom and in-person. There, we elected a new Local Council and saw the ratification of several resolutions, including one setting our chapter priorities around Labor, Mutual Aid, Municipal Action, and Health Justice, a re-commitment to fighting crime cameras in our city with Eye on Surveillance, the creation of a strategic Westbank engagement campaign, and a commitment to increasing member engagement towards building a multiracial working-class organization.
We also voted to refine our standards for comradely behavior by agreeing to follow the widely adopted Jemez Principles as a guiding light. Read more about that here.
General Meeting – Saturday, 7/30
This Saturday is our monthly general membership meeting. The meeting will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 2903 Jefferson Ave on the corner of Jefferson and Claiborne. There will also be a hybrid option available on Zoom. Register online here if you can't make it in person and see the draft agenda here.
Health Justice Fair / Brake Light Change event
Saturday, August 6, 2022, 1-4 p.m.
After a long COVID-induced hiatus, a combination Health Fair and Brake Light Change event will be held at Andre Cailloux Park at 2437 Bayou Rd, New Orleans, LA 70119 on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be blood pressure checks, free brake light changes, community health resources, food, and more. Want to volunteer? Just show up at 1230 p.m. on the day, and we'll get you trained and assigned a role. Or just come through and meet some comrades.
Co-Chair Search
While we were delighted to usher in new chapter leadership, it is incomplete, and we are currently searching for another chapter co-chair. Our bylaws require that one of our co-chairs not be a cis white male; if you are not a cis white male and interested in chapter leadership (or know someone who might be), please help us fill this vacancy in our Local Council. Feel free to reach out on Slack or email [email protected]
