An important update. June-July 2022 Newsletter ‌ ‌ ‌ Quote of the Month Josh in the Emerson ShopRite, announcing new steps to make life more affordable for Jersey families: “We need to crack down on foreign-owned shipping companies that are gouging people and acting like a cartel to raise prices at a time when families are grappling with rising costs. We are currently facing a shipping and supply chain crisis. These supply chain issues, along with increasing costs and delays, are badly impacting our small businesses, families, and local economies,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “I’m proud that the House passed critical bipartisan, bicameral legislation that I backed to alleviate pressure at our nation’s ports, support American businesses, and bring costs down.” NJSpotlight: Gottheimer pushes measures to keep a lid on prices On Thursday's episode of Chat Box, Rep. This bipartisan legislation will also help stop collusion and price fixing from major meat and poultry companies, fix the supply chain and get food to shelves faster, assist struggling livestock and meat producers, support small and medium sized agricultural producers, invest in renewable fuel infrastructure, and more. The plan builds on the progress Gottheimer has led in Congress and in North Jersey, including clawing back a $2.8 million federal investment for Ridgewood Water, working to address dangerous levels of lead water, helping ensure greater transparency into the levels of lead throughout Jersey schools, and working to replace old and unsafe lead pipelines. Gottheimer Leads 19 House Members in Push to Invest in Local Police Departments Photo: Gottheimer highlighting the Invest to Protect at the Newton Police Department Gottheimer led a letter signed by a group of 19 Members of Congress calling on House Leadership to bring bipartisan, bicameral legislation — H.R. 6448, the Invest to Protect Act — to the House floor to better support rural and small police departments. “The only way to make a department better is to invest wisely in de-escalation and domestic violence training and essential tools, in recruiting and retaining the best talent, and to ensure they can be involved in their community,” the Members of Congress wrote in the letter to House leadership. “We need to ensure our officers and police departments have all the tools they need to fight crime and protect themselves and our families…. For these reasons, we urge you to bring this key bipartisan, bicameral, legislation to the floor.” The bipartisan, bicameral Invest to Protect Act would create a new grant program to invest in local police departments that have fewer than 200 officers. Grants would be available for officer training, recruitment, and other personnel costs, as well as body cameras and other equipment. The legislation will also reduce excessive reporting requirements of metrics that often do not apply to small areas. Learn more here. Gottheimer-Backed Bill Signed into Law, Ensures Children Have Access to Food, School Meals Program Photo: Gottheimer taking questions from students at Northvale Public School. Less than one week before school meal provisions were set to expire, bipartisan legislation backed by Congressman Gottheimer — the Keep Kids Fed Act — passed through Congress and has now been signed into law. This legislation extends critical school meal flexibilities that have helped prevent children in North Jersey, and all over the country, from going hungry during the summer and throughout the school year. “We cannot let a single child go hungry. Over the summer, finding a reliable source of food can become more difficult for children, and throughout the school year it’s impossible for a child to succeed in school if they’re hungry. When the result would be scores of students starting their day with a sharper mind, stronger body, and better chance of a successful school day, there is no excuse to not support critical measures like this one,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “I am proud to have voted for this bipartisan bill that will extend much needed resources for our children and take a critical step forward to help ensure they are fed.” Learn more here.
