Animals are dying in aquariums.

Work with us to put an end to this!

Dear John,

She was one of many who died that year. She was a bonnethead shark but we do not know her name. She probably wasn't given one. She was brought into the aquarium to be put on display. Soon after she died.

She was held captive at Scarborough Sea Life centre. On the aquarium ‘stocklist’, she was just a number. No details were given for her, no name, no age. No details on why she died. Just a number that came in at the beginning of the year, and was dead by the end.

Sharks and other animals like her are dying in UK aquariums right now. That is why I need your help. I am asking you to send a donation today to lobby the government for change for these animals, and expose exactly what is going on in UK aquariums.

She was just one of hundreds of individuals who died at Scarborough Sea Life that year. And one of thousands who have died in aquariums across the UK.

Obtaining and reading the stocklists of aquariums has given us some insight into this horrifying death rate. Hundreds of animals died, many in the same year they arrived at the aquarium. Some animals were dead in less than a month after they arrived.

  • An octopus at London Sea Life died within weeks of being shipped in.
  • Half of the razorfish that arrived at Blackpool Sea Life died within a month.
  • 44 damsel fish arrived at Scarborough Sea Life - all of them died

But what is missing from these records is any information on why or how the animals died. This is a huge problem with the zoo licensing system which regulates aquariums and zoos: these businesses do not have to explain in their stocklists, why or how the animals have died.

How can this be acceptable? How can these businesses keep that information from the public? We need to stop this! Your donation today will help expose these darks secrets and demand this information be made public.

Sadly, many people still do not care enough about fish or other sea animals. But I know you are different, I know you have love and compassion for all animals, including fish. I know you think all animals should be able to live free in the wild and you will do all it takes to help them.

By donating today, you are funding the only campaign in the UK completely dedicated to fighting for ALL animals in aquariums. Someone has to do it! Someone has to be there to speak up for fishes, crabs, octopuses and other animals. And if it’s not you and me, then who will?

So please, give a gift today and together we will expose this cruel industry and fight to shut it down. To protect animals from early death and to keep them free in the wild.

Best wishes,

Dr Andrew Kelly, Director

Funds raised from this appeal will support our campaign to end the aquarium industry, and tackle the issues with zoo and aquarium regulation. If we raise more than we need it will be put towards our wider work for animal freedom. Thank you.
