One of America's most precious wilderness areas is under threat by a proposed sulfide-ore copper mine. The Forest Service is considering a plan to save the area from mining and is accepting comments now - we have a short window to win these protections, but we need to act quickly.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park in northeast Minnesota are among America's most beautiful and remote places. This pristine wilderness - with its famous clear waters - welcomes thousands of visitors each year, supports vital jobs in outdoor recreation and conservation, and provides habitat for wild species.

The proposed mine would generate waste and pollution, including sulphuric acid and heavy metal toxins that would pollute the Boundary Waters. A devastating Environmental Assessment determined that sulfide-ore copper mining cannot be done safely in the area.

Friend, heavy metal mining is America's most toxic industry and the sulfur oxide mining technology has a particularly bad track record for spills and catastrophic failure. Sulfuric acid and heavy metal pollution from the proposed mining project threatens permanent damage to the Boundary Waters, along with nearby lakes, rivers, and even groundwater.

Beyond the environmental damage, the proposed mining project does not make economic sense. Pollution would cost hundreds of millions of dollars in lost income from the outdoor recreation industry if the proposed mine moves forward, according to an independent economic analysis.

The evidence is clear - we must protect the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs from sulfide-ore copper mining.
