It might not be in the news every day, but there’s a major technological threat facing our country right now: the lack of a coordinated strategy around securing 5G telecommunications.

Here’s why it matters.

5G is quickly becoming the dominant network for wireless technology. Right now, China is one of the leading manufacturers of the underlying components for these 5G networks, but Chinese dominance in this sector could be exploited to engage in espionage, monitor foreign corporations, and governments, and support Chinese military operations.

Without a comprehensive and focused strategy on how the United States will secure its 5G network, we risk putting American families, businesses, and our consumer and other data at risk.

John, this is a major national security threat, which is why I have authored and introduced the Secure 5G and Beyond Act. This bill would require the administration to develop a comprehensive strategy to protect the United States and assist allies in maximizing the security of their 5G systems.
