JOHN,

I’m Maya Rose, Max’s cooler, smarter, taller sister and I thought it was about time I talked with you about my big brother.

My brother and I have always been close, which I think is pretty rare considering he is four and a half years older than me. From a young age, I was always known as Max Rose’s sister. Did this infuriate me at times? Oh yes. Sometimes I’d reply, “No, Max is my brother and my name is Maya.” But most of the time it made me feel so cool. I’d walk down the hall at school and hear “Maya!” or “Wow, you’re Max’s little sister?”

Max is the brother who ate leftovers for breakfast and spent countless hours at wrestling practice, only to come home and test out his new moves on me — but only after we’d spent hours playing NBA Live (he always took the Knicks, and I took the Bulls).

Max and Maya as children.

He has always been a fun brother, but he’s also the brother whom I consult before making every single important decision in my life, especially when it concerns my professional growth. He responds with such immediacy, seemingly dropping everything else to talk to me – so much so, that I wonder if he’s had enough time to process what I’m saying! But in fact, it is the opposite. He has a great ability to think clearly and understand a situation, right out of the gate. Max never fails to make me feel so supported.

I recently defended my doctoral dissertation in psychology at 36 weeks pregnant. As I was preparing for my defense, Max looked at me and said: “You got this, Maya.” And then, two weeks later, before my husband and I left for the hospital for the birth of our daughter, he said it again “You got this, Maya.” Those simple words of encouragement were exactly what I needed in those moments, and Max knew that.

I feel so lucky to know that Max is always in my corner. And I know that Max is in the corner of all of us Staten Islanders and South Brooklynites. That’s just who Max is. He constantly strives to support, listen, and find solutions to help the people around him.

Max has always had my back and right now he’s in a tough race, so I’m reaching out to all of you to ask if you’ll chip in today and help Max get back to doing what he does best – standing up for us in Congress.
