Hey Friend – did you miss our New Voices, New Power event earlier this month? Don’t worry we have a full recap just for you!
This event was a part of our New Power Project, an effort to help candidates from under-resourced communities overcome the obstacles and challenges that come with running for office, at any level. Phil Olaleye, who is running for State Representative in Georgia's 59th district, joined us to share how the New Power Project provided the jumpstart to his run for office.
“There is a ton of work as a first time candidate, and a ton of work just in general. We have many races on the ballot that will affect my ability to get good work done. New Power was instrumental as a first time candidate, my campaign manager was a first time campaign manager, and you don’t know what you don’t know. And Lucy (New Politics Campaign Advisor) was a breath of fresh air – just the resources, the templates, the guidance, the calls on calls on calls that we had with her. Campaigns are incredibly stressful and chaotic, and she was the calm in all of that.” ~ Phil Olaleye, Candidate for State Representative in Georgia's 59th district
“I'm humble to say that even at my age, I'm still teachable. And I'm just really grateful for the support I've received, not only from Mr. David and all the New Power donors, and those who established this program – thank you. Because I’m somebody who needed you and you came at the right time.” ~ Josey Garcia, who is running for State Representative in Texas' 124th district
“Local campaigns usually don’t get the same level of attention and resources as congressional campaigns do, so having national organizations like New Politics and people like Lucy around made a big difference with our campaign. Lucy came to Philadelphia for a weekend and helped us knock on doors. Having the expertise of a national organization in my community was incredibly helpful to me.” ~ Andre Carroll, Former Candidate for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 201st district
New Politics aims to help more servant leader candidates overcome the barriers that too often prevent people from running for public office, while expanding the pathways into elected office for a new generation.
We support outstanding military veterans and national service leaders, alumni of programs like AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, to step up and serve our country again, this time through politics. We were proud to be behind the movement of veterans who ran for office for the first time in 2018, and we have big plans to grow into the future.
