TODAY IS HUMAN RIGHTS DAY! GIVE THE GIFT OF HUMAN RIGHTS »
Dear John,

Please join with me to celebrate Human Rights Day. Together, we can empower people with the tools, knowledge, and resources they can use to improve their lives.

Your gift today will help some of the most oppressed and vulnerable individuals in the world to elect their own leaders, voice opinions without fear, gain access to justice, and remove so many entrenched barriers that prevent them from living in peace.

YOUR GIFT WILL HELP PEOPLE LIKE ELISABETH
After her family’s land was seized by a mining company in the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo, Elisabeth Banza Mwemena was forced to make and sell charcoal to survive. She and her neighbors had no legal recourse and nowhere to turn until The Carter Center stepped in to help. Now, she and others in her community have been compensated for their land, and local human rights organizations have learned proven methods for exposing and combating exploitation.
The contribution you make today will enable us to:

  • Support a global network of Carter Center Human Right Defenders who rely on us for in-person and online forums where they can share best practices and for the international publicity and attention that can buffer them from violent retaliation.

  • Help establish or strengthen government protections for human rights in more than 25 countries, including Colombia, Palestine, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  • Continue our groundbreaking efforts on behalf of women and girls, whose human rights too often are violated as part of cultural “tradition” or misunderstood religious interpretations. The involvement of religious leaders we enlist is key to correcting these injustices.

  • Sustain our work in monitoring elections around the world and our landmark efforts after those elections. That’s when access to public information and a fair justice system are essential to ensuring that democracies can truly thrive.

Human rights, along with the sense of justice and feeling of self-worth they bring to people, are the “seeds of peace” the world needs so badly. That’s why The Center Carter fights so hard to advance these rights and why I’m so grateful for your generous support of this vital work.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Carter
