MassGOP hits AG Maura Healey, other elected Dems, with lawsuit over continued harassment of signature collectors July 26, 2022 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Evan Lips, communications director 617-523-5005 ext. 245 WOBURN -- Responding to a leftist campaign of harassment targeting volunteer referendum signature collectors and potential signers, Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons on Monday filed a tandem of lawsuits against Attorney General Maura Healey and other elected Democrats. The lawsuits filed in federal and state court note that Healey has "taken no action at all" after Lyons and other Republicans called on her to enforce state civil rights laws, which identify penalties and fines for individuals who interfere with volunteers collecting signatures for referendums or initiative petitions through "threats, intimidation, or coercion." Also named in the lawsuits are Acton state Sen. Jamie Eldridge and Waltham City Councilor Jonathan Paz, both Democrats, for "impeding and shutting down signature collection, thereby depriving the Plaintiffs of the equal protection of the laws and their constitutional privileges." Volunteers have until Aug. 24 to collect the 40,000-plus signatures required to put a new law making illegal immigrants eligible to receive Massachusetts driver's licenses before voters this fall in the form of a referendum. "Our volunteers have been harassed, some have even had their home addresses shared on social media, signature sheets have been ripped up, and we're saying enough is enough," Lyons said. "Maura Healey has a responsibility as the lead law enforcement officer to protect everyone's civil rights, even those she disagrees with, but she only protects those she agrees with. "Not only is she refusing to protect our volunteers' civil rights, we believe she is working hand-in-hand with leftists to defeat our efforts to let voters decide on this law. We'll let a jury decide if this is acceptable ." Read a copy of the federal filing by clicking here. Read a copy of the state filing by clicking here.
