Have You Accessed Behavioral Health Crisis Services for Your Child Up to the Age of 24? Your Feedback Is Important!

In November of 2021, MCF sent out a survey to families asking about their use of behavioral health crisis services in the last three years for a youth under the age of 21. Thank you to all who responded. There was so much national interest in our survey that a new (but similar) survey was created by the Family-Run Executive Director Leadership Assocation (FREDLA) and the Institute for Innovation and Implementation at the University of Maryland School of Social work to distribute nationally, in order to gauge differences among states and measure change over time as states work to improve their behavioral health crisis services for children and youth.

Some of the changes made to the new survey include asking about families' use of crisis services for a child or youth up to the age of 24 (MCF's survey asked about the last three years). Please take a few minutes to complete this survey so that your feedback can be used on a national level.

Survey responses are anonymous, and no one will be able to identify or trace any person who responds to the survey. Results will be used to inform the development of effective and responsive crisis systems for children and youth with mental health or substance use emergencies. Crisis services include law enforcement, crisis hotlines or text lines, mobile crisis teams, walk-in centers and hospital emergency departments. The survey will remain open until July 30, 2022.

Advocate for Mental Health and Substance Use Care in Maryland

Equal Treatment Maryland is a campaign of the Maryland Behavioral Health Coalition to encourage Maryland citizens to stand up and demand access to mental health and substance use care when and where needed. Here are a few reasons why this is so important:
  • Two-thirds of Maryland counties qualify as federally designated mental health professional shortage areas

  • Commercial health insurance companies in Maryland reimburse behavioral health providers nearly 20% less than other doctors

  • Maryland ranked 7th worst in the nation for rates of opioid deaths from April 2020 through April 2021
So what can you do to help? Start by going to the Equal Treatment Maryland Action Center website to find events where candidates for Maryland's next governor will be in attendance. Find one that works for you and then download advocacy resources like info sheets, printable signs and more to help you speak up in support of Marylanders living with mental health and substance use disorders. You can also sign up to receive email updates and action alerts from the Equal Treatment Maryland campaign.

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Now Available Nationwide

The new 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is now available in Maryland and across the United States. Contacting 988 provides a direct connection to support for anyone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, having thoughts of suicide, or who may be worried about someone who needs crisis support.

When people call, text or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors who will listen, provide support and connect them to local resources if necessary. The crisis counselors are trained to help in a variety of crisis situations, and no caller is required to disclose any personal information.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of more than 200 crisis centers that helps thousands of people overcome crisis situations every day. These centers are supported by local and state sources as well as the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
