Dear Friend,
Today, we are celebrating the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation in our nation's history. For too long, individuals with disabilities have lacked access to health care. Whether it be in New Mexico or elsewhere in the US - our systems are built in a one-size-fits-all model. In the face of this injustice, we must do better to strive for equity for all people with disabilities, in our community and nationwide.
As your Representative in Congress, I have made it my priority to ensure that everyone in New Mexico is provided with equal and ample opportunities to live full and fulfilling lives. While meeting with disability advocates, I learned more about the firsthand experiences and challenges that New Mexicans with disabilities face as they move through the world on a day-to-day basis - from accessing education and public transportation to facing higher rates of financial insecurity. We must do what we can to address these disparities whenever and wherever we can. Whether that looks like equal access to their desired career, or the opportunity to enjoy all of the incredible outdoor experiences that our state has to offer, it is important that we guarantee the right for everyone in New Mexico to seek out and enjoy these opportunities.
One of the most important tools that we can use to provide for the needs of New Mexicans with disabilities is the Medicare for All Act of 2021, which is why I continue to fight for its passage in the House of Representatives. Medicare for All would establish a national health insurance program that would:
- Cover all United States residents, regardless of existing conditions
- Provide for automatic enrollment of individuals upon birth or residency
- Cover services or items that are medically necessary, including important long-term care for differently abled New Mexicans
Leading a fulfilling life means different things to different people. For some, it is having a worthwhile career, for others, it is being able to witness all of the natural beauty that our state and country have to offer. Regardless of these differences, as your Representative I will continue to work my hardest to make sure that all New Mexicans have the ability to seek out meaningful experiences in their lives.
