Friends -

Last week, a bipartisan majority in the House voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that protects the right to same-sex and interracial marriage.

It’s a straightforward, common sense bill, and the Senate should pass it immediately.

Will you add your name today to tell the Senate to pass the Respect for Marriage Act and protect the right of everyone in this country to marry the person they love?

Right now, Supreme Court decisions are the only thing that protects the right of everyone in the country to marry who they love. There’s still a federal law on the books that denies the right of same-sex couples to marry. It’s called the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), so if Obergefell (the decision that legalized same-sex marriage) were ever overturned, DOMA would be the law once again.

Let’s not leave anything to chance. Roe was considered settled law until it wasn’t. In fact, Justice Thomas in his concurring opinion overturning Roe said the same reasoning used to declare there was no right to an abortion should also be used to overturn rights to contraception and same-sex marriage. The rights and freedoms we’ve secured from past Supreme Court cases cannot be taken for granted.

The Supreme Court looks increasingly like it is trying to use its slim majority to impose a right-wing ideology on the country.

The Senate should put this bill on the floor for a vote right away — even if we need to delay the August recess. This is the work we were elected to do, and every person in this country deserves to know that we will protect their right to marry the person they love.

Add your name: Tell the Senate to pass the Respect for Marriage Act to codify the right to same-sex and interracial marriage. This cannot be left to the whims of right-wing politicians masquerading as justices.

This is an urgent issue. There may not be a case yet on the docket targeting these rights, but Republican state legislatures across the country are targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

Bullying gay and trans kids is not popular. This is not only a chance to prove that, but we can send a powerful and necessary message to those kids that they are loved.

Thank you in advance for adding your name and helping us push for this important legislation.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
