Dear Jack,

[ [link removed] ]Trump is bribing
Republican senators

If you or I were facing a trial and tried to bribe the jurors, we would go
to jail.

But Donald Trump is out here raising buckets of cold hard cash for GOP
senators – the same ones who will serve as jurors in his looming
impeachment trial.^1

Republican senators must return all contributions that Trump helped
solicit and reject any future offers.

It's not just campaign contributions. Recent reporting shows that Trump is
also using government resources to woo congressional Republicans with free
weekend getaways at the Camp David presidential retreat.^3

After reports emerged that Trump was wooing Republican senators by helping
them raise money at events and by deploying his campaign email list to
fundraise for them, Richard Painter, George Bush's ethics chief, spoke
out:^2

This is a bribe. Any other American who offered cash to the jury before
a trial would go to prison for felony bribery. But he can get away with
it? Criminal. The senators can raise their own campaign cash. Any
senator who accepts cash from [Trump] before the impeachment trial is
guilty of accepting a bribe and should go to the slammer.

If Donald Trump wants to help Republicans win the senate, he is free to
raise money for candidates who are trying to unseat Democratic senators.
But fundraising for sitting Republican senators in advance of an
impeachment trial is basically bribing the people who are supposed to be
impartial jurors.

The last thing these senators want is to be embroiled in new scandals
because of Trump. Right now, we need to shine a glaring spotlight on the
Republican senators accepting Trump bribes and force the scandal into the
national conversation.
