I've known Norman Lear and have been a supporter of the organization he founded with Barbara Jordan, People For the American Way, for years. I simply cannot think of anyone who has contributed more to the movement to defend our fundamental rights and democracy from the growing threat of far-right extremism.
From the combat missions he flew in World War II to defeat the rise of global fascism to his founding of People For, Norman has dedicated his life to protecting the true ideals that America stands for: freedom, equality, opportunity, and justice for all. I’m delighted to call him a friend.

This is such an important time for the work of People For. Even though we defeated Trump in 2020, we’ve continued to witness the Far Right’s contempt for the basic foundations of our democratic system.
We saw it with the violent ransacking of the U.S. Capitol on January 6 by Trump’s extremist supporters.
We’ve seen it with the endless attacks on the right to vote.
We’ve seen it with the far-right Supreme Court majority overturning long-settled precedents like Roe v. Wade.
And we continue to see it with the Far Right’s unyielding devotion to Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 election.
This is a pivotal time for the very survival of our democracy – and I’m so thankful that an organization like People For is on the front lines, working to safeguard the fundamental freedoms that the Far Right is working to dismantle.
I’m also thankful that you’re here to defend the basic democratic principle that every American deserves a say, through their right to vote, in the direction of our country ... and the principle that everyone deserves to have their most basic human rights and dignity protected equally, regardless of their race, religion, gender, zip code, net worth, or who they love.
