Dear John,

As we head toward 2020, all of us at The Sentencing Project want to thank you for your commitment to reforming the U.S. criminal justice system.

While we have a long way to go before mass incarceration and its racial disparities are a thing of the past, people like you have helped produce a political environment in which Democrats and Republicans alike support sentencing reform.

But we need to quicken the pace. Our prison population is down by 7% since its peak of 2.2 million in 2009. The Sentence Project’s research has determined that at this rate it will take 72 years before we will have reduced that number by half.

Your tax-deductible contribution will shorten the road to the end of mass incarceration and a justice system that treats everyone fairly. Please stand with The Sentencing Project this coming year as we:

  • Provide strategic and communications support to local activists as they push for legislation to provide avenues for case-by-case reviews of life sentences

  • Build support for the right to vote for more millions of people who are disenfranchised as a result of a felony conviction—through research and education during the election season

  • Produce an assessment of racial and ethnic disparities in the juvenile justice system, including the relative influence of declining crime rates, policy shifts, and legal reforms

You can truly make a difference today by making a generous contribution at www.sentencingproject.org/donate. Together we can take full advantage of the groundswell of support for ending mass incarceration.

With best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year,

Marc Mauer
