Bipartisan Senate Group Strikes Deal to Rewrite Electoral Count Act
The changes outlined by the senators are intended to prevent a repeat of the effort on Jan. 6, 2021, to overturn the presidential election in Congress.

John,

As a result of Donald Trump’s coordinated effort to undermine the results of the 2020 election, our democracy came perilously close to destruction.

I am proud to have been part of a bipartisan group of senators who have introduced an Electoral Count Act reform proposal to safeguard American democracy and make sure nothing like the attempt to reverse the election on January 6 ever happens again.

We cannot forget that a group of bad actors could so easily undermine the peaceful transition of power that Americans have taken for granted for centuries. These bipartisan fixes will help close the loopholes that former President Trump and his associates attempted to exploit, including by making certain that voters – not the Vice President – select the next President of the United States of America and making it harder to launch unfounded objections in Congress to states’ lawful electoral votes.

These solutions will protect the fair and honest results of our elections and ensure that American democracy will last beyond the lifetimes of our children and grandchildren. This is a critical first step, but we still have a long way to go to fix our electoral system. As a whole, our country needs a lasting and comprehensive restoration of the Voting Rights Act, protection of the right to vote against attempts at suppression and subversion, and large-scale investment in our election infrastructure.

I am optimistic that we can repair the damage to our democratic process and public confidence in our free and fair elections, and I hope I can count on your support as we move forward. If you are ready to reform our electoral system, add your name here.

Thank you,

Chris
