Hi John.
I hope you’re doing well. Like so many folks throughout our community, I remain deeply concerned about the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. So today, I wanted to update you on some concrete and bipartisan actions I’m taking to protect the rights of all Kansans.
Overturning Roe clears the way for harsh state laws to block women's access to health care. That could even include Kansas if changes are made to the state constitution in the near future – with no exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or even if the mother's life is at risk. These decisions should be between a woman and her doctor, not politicians pushing their divisive agendas.
Unfortunately, overturning Roe could be one step among many. In fact, Supreme Court Justice Thomas wrote in his opinion that other rights may now also be at risk. That includes the right to marry who you love and even access to contraception.
The last thing Kansans need is more extremism. Congress has to act now to protect the people’s rights and freedoms. That's why I introduced and helped pass legislation in the House last week to protect marriage equality and access to contraception. I'm pleased to share both bills passed with bipartisan support.

I am a strong supporter of the Women’s Health Protection Act to help restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. But it’s clear we need to take additional actions now given that other rights are at risk too.
That’s why I’m glad we passed the Respect for Marriage Act in the House – which earned strong bipartisan support. Passing this bill is a critical step towards protecting marriage equality at all levels of our government and in every corner of the United States. It’ll help enshrine in federal law that people can marry who they love – regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. I am pleased that we moved quickly and worked together to give every family, in Kansas and across the country, a sense of security in the face of rising discrimination.
In addition, I was glad to vote for the Right to Contraception Act. This bill would establish a legal right to obtain, use, and provide contraception under federal law. I also introduced a new bill to increase access to birth control and reproductive health care services - the Expanding Access to Family Planning Act.
I know these issues can raise a lot of strong feelings for many people. I am always here to serve everyone in our district regardless of party, and whether we agree on every issue or not. But at the end of the day, I believe we have to respect people’s fundamental liberties.
Politicians shouldn’t push their own divisive agendas and interfere in your personal decisions. You should be able to decide who you want to marry. You should be able to decide if you want to start a family.
We can clearly see a choice before us. One is the path of extremism and more empty promises. The other is where we listen to each other, try to find common ground whenever we can, and focus on concrete and bipartisan solutions that can make a difference in people’s lives.
I know which path I’m choosing. It’s never easy, but we have to find ways to help our country heal and move forward together.
It's an honor to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. Please always feel free to contact me or ask a question.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
