Dear Friend,
Today, we are celebrating the 71st anniversary of International Human Rights Day with Indigenous Peoples whose resilience and dignity has persevered in the face of assimilation, genocide, and attempts to dismantle our cultural ways of life.
On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declaring that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." This important Declaration set precedence for the rights of Indigenous Peoples and became the basis for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
At Cultural Survival, every day we work to make these rights a reality, through Indigenous led grant-making and advocacy, by supporting Indigenous women's and youth leadership in community media, and amplifying Indigenous voices through our Indigenous Rights Radio programs about international human rights.
- In 2019, our Community Media Grants Project funded 35 Indigenous media projects in nine countries, totaling $210,000, strengthening Indigenous languages and promoting freedom of expression.
- The Keepers of the Earth Fund awarded 20 projects in 10 countries, totaling $79,864 supporting the right to development and self-determination.
- Our Indigenous Rights Radio Program released over 160 radio programs in 69 countries to 1000+ Indigenous stations on Indigenous rights.
In observance of Human Rights Day and the Indigenous communities we work with, join Cultural Survival as we support Indigenous rights worldwide. Please give today. Every gift will go to amplify Indigenous Peoples voices around the world as we continue to fight for our lands, languages, spiritual and artistic traditions, and dynamic cultures.
Now until December 31, your gift will be doubled up to $40,000, thanks to a generous match by a our Board of Directors.
