When Democrats are in charge, we get stuff done. Take, for example, the 2020 sessions, when Democrats were in charge of the Virginia House of Delegates, Senate, and the Governor’s seat.

In those two years, we passed legislation establishing universal background checks on all firearm purchases. We raised the minimum wage. We targeted workforce development through effective programming at our community colleges, and we began the transformation of the energy landscape in response to the looming climate threat.

Arguably the most important legislation was our repeal of restrictive photo ID laws, early voting opportunities, and automated voter registration through the DMV. We overhauled election rules so that no Virginians faced any hurdles when it came to exercising their democratic rights.

But ever since the GOP took the House and the executive branch in November, their efforts have been directed at culture wars that seek to divide our Commonwealth.

They attempted to ban books by targeting school teachers and school librarians. They are trying to dismantle regulations that help to ensure Virginians have clean water and breathe air free of toxins. They refuse to acknowledge our climate crisis and want to pull Virginia out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). And they are determined to take away basic human rights from women by restricting abortion care.

We cannot forget that the only thing standing in the way of a complete GOP takeover over our Commonwealth is one seat – my seat – which we won by ousting a Republican incumbent in 2019. And they’re putting their full force behind taking it back. We won’t let them.
