Enjoy watching deer? Or wild turkeys?
Become a citizen scientist and share your sightings. Volunteers are needed across the state and everyone can participate.
Become a Maine Deer Spy to help biologists better understand Maine's deer population.
Participating is easy! When you see deer between August 1 and September 30, all you need to do is make simple observations:
- Location
- Date and time
- The number of does (adult female deer with no antlers), bucks (deer with antlers), and/or fawns (young deer).
You can submit data online or by postal mail. Data recording instructions and examples of how to correctly record data are available online at mefishwildlife.com/deerspy

Wild Turkey August Production Survey
We are looking for wild turkey observations from as many folks as we can across Maine August 1-31.
When you see turkeys, make note of the number of turkey including how many young (poults), the date, and town.
This helps our biologists monitor annual reproduction and contributes to our management decisions.
This survey is conducted in most of the states in the US, using the same protocol. This allows cross comparisons between states, as each state work towards balancing use of this important wildlife resource, maintaining a sustainable population and social tolerance.
Observations may be entered online here. Or, fill out this form and mail it back.
