I have big news John,

Greenpeace is taking the government to court to overturn their approval of Shell’s new gas field, Jackdaw. Every time the government acts unlawfully to push through fossil fuel projects, Greenpeace will be here to challenge them in court—but that work is only part of the fight to stop the government opening up new fossil fuel projects.

We need you to join us and apply pressure on the government to ban all new oil and gas projects, which will do nothing to lower bills during this historic cost of living crisis and will only make the climate crisis worse.

Thousands of people are tweeting at Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng (the guy responsible for approving new oil and gas projects) right now—can you join them?

We’re taking the government to court because they approved Jackdaw without checking the full impacts it would have on the climate. By refusing to consider a majority of the emissions from Jackdaw, the government is sending us further down the path towards irreversible global warming. That means more extreme weather events like the heatwave we just experienced here in the UK and the heatwaves, floods and droughts that have continued to cause death and destruction globally. [1]

The government has falsely claimed that new oil and gas projects are the solution to tackling soaring energy bills. [2] The truth is, Jackdaw’s not going to help bring down energy bills or make the UK more energy secure, but it will make the climate crisis worse. Shell will sell the gas to whichever country pays the most for it. Instead of climate-wrecking new oil and gas projects, the government should focus on insulating our homes and doubling down on cheap, homegrown renewable energy, which will actually help tackle the cost of living and climate crises. [3]

Can you join thousands of other people tweeting at Kwasi Kwarteng to demand he #StopJackdaw and ban all new oil and gas projects?

While Greenpeace is prepared to hold the government to account any time they act unlawfully to push through new oil and gas fields, we need people power to ensure the government feels pressure at every turn. Whether it’s tweeting Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng right now, writing to your MP, or attending a rally, we need you! Join the movement to Stop Jackdaw, and all new oil and gas projects—we need your unique skill, passion and determination in this critical moment to fight for a just, liveable planet.

Together, we will put a stop to new oil and gas projects.

In solidarity,

Miranda & the Oil and Gas Team
