Hi John,
Elizabeth Warren here—and today I want to talk about my former student, Congresswoman Katie Porter.
Back in 2000, before either of us were in office, I was a law professor and Katie was in my class. I still remember the first day we met. My bankruptcy class was held early in the morning, meaning a lot of students had their heads down, trying to avoid being called on. But not Katie. She was bright eyed and ready to go. When the first answer she gave wasn’t her strongest, she came to my office hours and said “please keep calling on me. I am going to learn to do this.”

She certainly did learn, John. Years later, in 2012, then Attorney General of California Kamala Harris secured a settlement of $18 billion from our country’s biggest banks for their predatory lending practices that spurred the 2008 housing crisis. She asked if I knew anyone who could work as an “independent monitor” to make sure the Big Banks actually paid California families the money they were now owed. It was a massive undertaking, but I knew just the person for the job: my former student Katie Porter. She held the banks’ feet to the fire and ensured families received the money they were owed.
A little later down the road, following the election of Donald Trump in 2016, Katie knew she didn’t want to sit on the sidelines–she was going to run for office.
I’ve been proud to support her since the very beginning, and even more thrilled to see the incredible work she’s done in Congress.
Katie has been a champion for families while in office. With the help of her whiteboard, she’s stood up to CEOs from Big Banks and Big Oil companies, held government officials accountable, and brought attention to some of the issues most affecting working people. She’s been a relentless champion for lowering the cost of child care, and recently introduced legislation to prevent Big Oil from price gouging and lower the cost of gas.
I’m so glad to have Katie as a partner in Congress. But right now, she’s facing her toughest election yet. Due to redistricting, she has to introduce herself to thousands of new voters and her district is made up of an equal number of registered Democrats and Republicans.

Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth Warren
Katie is running for re-election in California’s 47th district, which includes Irvine and coastal Orange County. This purple district contains an equal number of Democrats and Republicans and is a must-win for Democrats. Consider pitching in today so we have the resources to keep Katie in Congress fighting for working people. |
