Right now, students and families across Florida are gearing up to go back to school. They’re picking up school supplies, buying new clothes, and finishing up summer projects.
But this year, our teachers and students are preparing for a new challenge as well — this will be the first full school year that ‘Don’t Say Gay’, the hateful legislation that targets LGBTQ+ students, parents, and teachers, is in effect.
Our students should be excited about going back to school, not filled with dread and fear about state-mandated discrimination. Our teachers should be able to focus on teaching, not worried about getting fired for who they love — but because of ‘Don’t Say Gay’, our most vulnerable kids will suffer, and our teacher shortage will only get worse.

Already, we’re seeing the harmful fallout of the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill in action.
In one school district, a rule was put in place to “warn parents” about LGBTQ students attending field trips. Elsewhere in the state, teachers are being asked to remove photos of their same-sex spouses from their classrooms.
It doesn’t have to be this way, John. Our students, teachers, and parents should feel safe, welcome, and supported in our schools. That’s why Senate Democrats are working every day to fight back against the GOP’s hateful agenda.
