When I think of the critical fights ahead of us right now, protecting and expanding our public lands tops the list. It's easy to see why: public lands are the key to all of our fights. If we want to stop the disastrous extinction and climate crises, preserve clean water, clean air, and a stable climate, and help remedy decades of systemic racism and inequitable access to the outdoors that we all have a right to enjoy, we need to protect 30% of our remaining undeveloped natural areas by 2030. It's ambitious. It's also utterly necessary, since public lands in every corner of the country are facing destructive challenges as I write this letter.
In Alaska's incredible Bristol Bay, the mining industry is hellbent on installing an open pit mine a quarter of a mile deep. In the pristine and fragile Arctic, Conoco-Phillips is aiming to pollute the ecosystem with miles of roads and pipelines, drill pads and airstrips. And in Tulsa, the Black-led movement to urge the Biden administration to designate Black Wall Street a national monument faces powerful opponents.
Look, I know that even reading about the crises all around us can be hard. But I also want you to know that as heartbreaking as these situations may be, we can win. When we fight, we win. I know this because I've seen it happen again and again through the Sierra Club's long history of mobilizing masses of ordinary citizens, working with local chapters, waging smart and targeted campaigns that push Congress and state and local governments to protect our planet, and rallying diverse coalitions and partners to speak up, loudly and in unison.
This is exactly the kind of crucial hard work that Wilderness Guardians support every day. Will you make a monthly gift of $5 or more to bolster our efforts to save and expand our treasured public lands? Your sustained support fuels Sierra Club's powerhouse campaigns.
Make your gift before our July 31 deadline, and we’ll send you a eco-friendly, reusable "Everyone Belongs" canvas tote bag as our way of saying thanks!
Supporter, thank you for saying "yes" to our request for help today, and saying "yes" to protecting our air and water, giving everyone access to wild places, fighting the climate crisis, and helping make communities more healthy and resilient.
Onward,
Dan Chu
