I was a Republican outsider, just out of the military where I got blown up by the Taliban and lost both of my legs. I didn’t have connections to millionaires and billionaires, and I certainly didn’t have millions of my own to fund my race. They told me that, as a result, I’d never win. They told me that wanting to continue my service to our country wasn’t enough: I needed the political connections that a staff sergeant like myself just didn’t have. I refused to believe the American people were that naive and jaded. I refused to take no for an answer. And I won. Now, I’m up against a similar challenge: redistricting has thrown my family’s home into a newly drawn district. And this isn’t the easiest district in Florida for Republicans to win.
