Your weekly Indivisible Newsletter Indivisibles,
We learned many things from the latest January 6th Committee hearings.
We saw images of Sen. Josh Hawley riling up the crowd and then later fleeing the very people whose insurrection he supported, and we heard about members of Vice President Pence’s security detail leaving messages for their family out of fear that they might be killed. All of this was juxtaposed with the former president doing nothing in response besides continuing to advocate for the theft of an election.
Silence by a sitting president in the face of an insurrection would be complicity. Actively tweeting in condemnation of your chosen Vice President, who is in the path of the mob you provoked, is participation.
But we knew this. Trump and MAGA extremism are intrinsically intertwined. His refusal to condemn the insurrectionists was not a one-time lapse in judgment but rather a continued execution of his plan to steal the election and maintain power.
In one of the most damning moments of the hearings, outtakes from the former president’s Jan. 7 speech in response to the attempted coup showed Trump stating, “I don’t want to say ‘the election is over’ I just want to say ‘Congress has certified the results.’”
Even in the face of an attack on our democracy and multiple deaths, Trump still refused to give up the farce of election fraud.
As we all knew then and know now, the election was over. There was no fraud. The extremists responsible for the violence of January 6th were stoked by a movement of MAGA Republicans more concerned with maintaining their own status than the health and function of our democracy. And they are as committed to taking back power as ever.
That election may have been over, but this one has just started. As we count down this weekend to being 100 days out from the November 8 midterm elections, let’s remember just how close we came to a coup. Let’s remember who was responsible. Let’s remember who continued to incite the insurrectionists. Let’s remember who refused to condemn them. And let’s remember that those same people are attempting to wrest control of our democracy all over again.
It is time to go all in to defeat MAGA mayhem. If we don’t put the work in now, January 6th won’t only be a memory but a prediction of our future.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
Your 5 weekly to-dos
- Click here to register for Indivisible’s National Phonebank for Mandela Barnes on Sunday, July 31 at 4pm ET/1pm PT. To win in November, we must put the work in today. In celebration of being 100 days out from the election, Friday begins Indivisible’s Weekend of Action jumpstarting our campaign to Give No Ground. Groups all over the country will be holding events. Join us in our first national phonebank of the cycle for endorsed candidate Mandela Barnes in Wisconsin.
- Click here to register for Indivisible’s Bird-dogging Training on Tuesday, August 2 from 8:00-9:30pm ET/5:00-6:30pm PT. Bird-dogging is a powerful tactic used by grassroots activists to get candidates and elected officials on the record about important issues. As we get closer to Nov. 8, it’s important that people see just how little these MAGA Republicans represent the will of the people. Learn how best to use their own statements against them at this training. This training will be facilitated by one of the founders of Bird-dog Nation.
- Click here to call your senator and demand they pass the Markey Court Expansion Bill. Even as Democrats work to expand our rights, the threat of them being overturned by the Supreme Court looms large. We must expand the court after Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell conspired to pack it for generations to come. The only way to re-legitimize the court is to expand it. Contact your senator and, when you’re done, click here to contact your representative and tell them to pass Rep. Mondaire Jones' House version of the bill.
- Click here to call your senator and tell them to pass the Right to Contraception Act and the Marriage Equality Act immediately. Following the Dobbs decision, same-sex marriage and access to contraception are now on the chopping block for the Republican Supreme Court. We cannot allow the MAGA-led rollback of our rights to continue -- not while our senators have the power to intervene. Voting against these bills would be wildly unpopular and put these politicians’ careers in jeopardy (which is why we saw some House Republicans vote with Democrats on these bills). Let’s make sure Republican senators know it too!
- Click here to register to Give No Ground. The fight for our country’s future begins today. If we do not hold the House and achieve a real majority in the Senate, our plans to codify basic human rights will falter. To win, we must get the message out. Give No Ground is our home for opportunities to phonebank, textbank, canvass, postcard, and more so that when November comes around, we can say that we gave it our all for democracy. And, while you’re there, check out the new Give No Ground resource hub to dive into more information about the tools and tactics we’ll use to win in November.
The work of defending democracy continues with your help. In order to keep Give No Ground running and to fund all of the work we do here at Indivisible, click here to donate today.
National Events
Click here to join the Rural Caucus in the election kick-off call this Wednesday, July 27 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. This call will feature a presentation by Rachel Rivas of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project where she will provide an overview of various sectors of extremists, how to identify their insignias or symbols, and ideas on how you can use this information to increase your electoral safety practices. These meetings have a rural lens but are open to all Indivisibles looking to build the movement.
Click here to register for Indivisible’s Deep Canvassing Phonebank for Andy Levin, Mark Kelly, Jamie Mcleod-Skinner, and Katie Porter this Thursday, July 28 from 7pm-10pm ET/5pm-8pm PT. Deep canvassing is a proven method for persuading and moving voters to action even across ideological differences. At this event, you’ll receive a 1hr training on deep canvassing fundamentals, followed by a 2hr phonebank + debrief for the Western or Central Give No Ground candidate of your choice. At our last deep canvassing phonebank, we were able to move 10% of the voters we talked to which is a massive shift in the electorate, especially in close races! We will specifically focus on abortion in these phonebanks; so, come learn how to effect change in the abortion debate while making calls for progressive champions.
Click here to register for the Give No Ground National Activist Election Call on Thursday, August 4 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The 2022 midterms will be less than 100 days away! The political landscape continues to shift. Get an inside look at what Indivisibles are doing this election to make sure we Give No Ground to the radical right in November.
Click here to register for the Freedom is on the Ballot: Tested Ads and Messaging training on Thursday, August 4 from 1:00pm-2:15 ET/10:00am-11:15 PT. In collaboration with ASO Communications, Community Change, Future Forward, MoveOn, and Way to Win, we’re calling for all communicators, influencers, and activists to join us in discussing the tested storylines that have been most effective in inspiring voters and fighting back against Trump Republicans’ attacks. With freedom on the ballot, we must go on offense now putting out effective content to render clear the stages and terms of this election in order to ignite voters’ anger and turn it into active resistance to the MAGA agenda.
