As we experience more extreme heat and thunderstorms we must adapt to stay safe.
Ways to beat the heat:
- Check the forecast before planning a day outside
- Never leave pets or people in a parked car
- When spending prolonged periods outside stay hydrated, dress appropriately, and wear sunscreen
- Stay in an air conditioned place and visit NJ211.org to find a cooling center near you
- Avoid strenuous activities outside
- Check on your family and friends, especially those vulnerable to hot weather
Safety during severe thunderstorms:
Stay away from bodies of water
Seek shelter immediately. If no structure is available, find a low spot away from trees, fences and poles
If you are in a car, pull safely onto the shoulder of the road away from any trees
If you are home, close windows securely and draw blinds and shades over windows
Secure outdoor objects such as lawn furniture that could blow away or cause damage
