My father, Peter, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, fighting in the Battle of Leyte Gulf – the largest naval battle of the war and, some say, the largest naval battle in history.

My mother, Kay, taught high school English for thirty-seven years in my town. After a long day at school, she taught my brothers, Peter and Paul and David, and my sister Dora and me, the power of words and the way we can wield them to build each other up or to break each other down.

My mother’s parents – my grandparents – toiled in the fields of Aroostook County, harvesting potatoes from the fertile soil of Ashland, Maine, with dirt under their nails, while my father’s parents hailed from Farmington and Stonington, from a long line of people who would carve granite from the earth with sweat on their brow.

My grandparents and my parents are gone now, but the values they instilled in me have guided me all my life – the values of hard work, strength, courage, patience, and, above all else, love of the great State of Maine and hope for its future. And the resilience that epitomizes Maine people.

The resilience of a young girl who was suffering from scoliosis, only to undergo a major spinal surgery that left me bedridden for the better part of a year and, later, with a literal backbone of steel. The strength to stand between women and their abusers as the first woman District Attorney in New England and, as your Attorney General, to stand up to the corporations and bad actors who would take advantage of Maine people.

The courage - or some might say craziness - to marry a widower with five young daughters — and, later, to fight for the life-saving health care my husband needed before I lost him. The patience to listen to five talkative, energetic grandchildren, the youngest born just days before the election in 2018. The love to serve this great state we all call home as your Governor. And the undying hope I have for our people – because of our people.

Those values aren’t unique to my family – they are at the heart of all Maine people. And in my years of public service, I have always believed this: that you – Maine people – are our greatest asset.

I’m ready to continue to fight for Maine people, and I want you by my side in this fight. Will you help us continue to make progress in Maine by donating $10 to my campaign for reelection?
