Dear
Reader,
“Surely the brave endurance of death is glorious and among the greatest achievements of the human mind. It will never rise to virtue if it believes that death is an evil, but it will rise up if it thinks that death is indifferent.”
—Seneca
"What happens in death is that the artisan lays aside his tool, or lets it drop, and the sailor steps out of the boat, which he now no longer needs after having landed. What takes place may even be likened to a liberation from a dungeon, the ending of an imprisonment."
—Josef Pieper
Death is evil, death is indifferent, death is a liberation. Clearly, thousands of years of thinking about death have not produced a consensus on what it is.
As brilliant and thoughtful as you, our dear readers, are, I’m not sure we will reach a consensus at our Intellectual Retreat either. Even so, I hope you’ll consider joining us on August 19-20 as we reflect on this fundamental human reality under the stewardship of instructors from Magdalen College of the Liberal Arts.
