“It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.” - Justice Anthony Kennedy, Obergefell v. Hodges
Folks —
This past Tuesday, I voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act in the House. This bill aims to recognize same-sex marriage under federal law – a long overdue act.
This vote was as joyous of a moment as it was sobering for me. The reality is, the freedom to marry who you love is in question as the far-right conservatives on the Supreme Court could overturn Obergefell v. Hodges next.
In his opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas outlined his game plan to take down some of the most sacred Supreme Court decisions – including Obergefell – that were decided on the right to privacy. To do so would not merely be immoral but also downright reprehensible.
For me, it’s simple: love should always be celebrated and protected.
Marriage is one of the oldest institutions that humans have taken part in as an act of unity and love towards one another.
I’ve always considered myself a strong LGBTQ+ ally and that stands true today. As long as I’m in Congress, Nevadans can rest assured that I’ll fight like hell to protect their right to marry.
I’m urging Republicans in the Senate to vote in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act which will recognize same-sex marriage under federal law.
It’s time that we make this right official and stand with our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters who make our country great.
I hope you’ll stand with me in this important fight.
In unity,
Susie Lee
P.S. – Protecting the rights of every Nevadan has always been my top priority in Congress. This year, I’m up for re-election and am facing my toughest challenge yet. I’d be deeply honored to receive your support for my campaign. → [[link removed]]
