We're 1 Step Closer to Winning a National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights [[link removed]]

Our fight for a National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights has reached an important milestone — we've won a historic Congressional hearing to move forward our efforts to pass legislation that will protect and respect the work of domestic workers.

Our very own Ai-jen Poo will testify at the hearing, and our domestic worker leaders will be on the Hill rallying our elected leaders to get their support for this important legislation.

The National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights is federal legislation that includes domestic workers in common workplace laws for the first time while creating new protections and enforcements to make care jobs good — and safe — jobs.

We are working to raise awareness for this critical piece of legislation and this hearing is a key step in moving it toward eventual passage.

Join us and tweet a thank you to our bill co-sponsors Senators Kristen Gillibrand, and Ben Ray Luján, and Representative Pramila Jayapal [[link removed]] for helping us reach this critical milestone.

Unbought and Unbossed: The NDWA 15th Anniversary Edition

We Dream in Black (WeDiB) [[link removed]] , in partnership with the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), is excited to present its 2022 Organizing Institute, Unbought and Unbossed.

This virtual Organizing Institute will be held from August 19-22, 2022 and will be streamed in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. We’re inviting all of our supporters to join us for the opening remarks on August 20 as we celebrate NDWA’s 15 years of domestic worker organizing! [[link removed]]

We Dream in Black (WeDiB) is an initiative of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) and is the organizing home that centers the voices and experiences of Black, Afro-Latina, and Afro-descendant domestic workers. Across the diaspora, our organizing is our power.

This year’s Organizing Institute will center our Unbossed: A Black domestic worker agenda [[link removed]] which is our organizing roadmap for the next five years, and honors the work that has been done and the work we will continue to do, as we fight for power, dignity, and respect.

Stand with DC Domestic Workers

The DC Domestic Worker Bill of Rights is in trouble and we need all of our DC supporters to take action today. [[link removed]]

In June, the bill had a hearing in the Labor and Workforce Development Committee where over 90 witnesses testified in strong support.

Then, Council Chairman Mendelson added a third committee referral. This last minute change has the potential to delay the bill’s passage and prevent it from passing before the end of the DC Council period.

Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie needs to know how many people enthusiastically support this bill and want to see it passed as soon as possible.

Domestic workers in DC have been fighting for years for inclusion in basic workplace protections and every day that this bill is not passed is another day that domestic workers remain unprotected from harassment and discrimination on the job. Take a minute today to tell Councilmember McDuffie that you want to see this bill passed as soon as possible. [[link removed]]

It's OUR Time - Anniversary Reflections

It's Our Time

Our 15th anniversary is fast approaching. As we prepare to celebrate this milestone and plan for the future, we continue to reflect on our movement ancestors and the policies that birthed the domestic worker movement.

Domestic work is rooted in slavery. Colonizers from Europe used violence to create an underclass of Black and Indigenous workers. This free labor enabled America to grow into a rich and powerful country very quickly.

Today, domestic workers have NO federal sexual harassment, minimum wage, or maximum work week protections. These exclusions from basic worker rights can be traced back to slavery and Jim Crow.

Visit our interactive timeline [[link removed]] to learn how domestic workers organized to fight against this oppression and helped to build the radical labor movement to challenge capitalism and white supremacy.
