When the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) gave its stamp of approval to Ventilation Shutdown Plus (VSD+), they sealed the fate of millions of animals—pigs, turkeys, and chickens—who have since been deliberately suffocated and left to die of heat stroke in factory farms across the US.
Today, the devastating effects of this decision are on full display: As bird flu spreads, the US poultry industry is now using VSD+ as a cheap way to dispose of live animals at an unprecedented scale—with the AVMA’s blessing.
Despite the escalating crisis, the AVMA is refusing to meet with veterinarians and animal welfare groups who are calling for more humane alternatives. They’re ignoring us. They’re ignoring you. They’re ignoring the cries of millions of suffering animals. Well, here’s one thing the AVMA can’t ignore: A massive newspaper ad that will hit Philadelphia—right in time for its prestigious national convention in the city.
Later this week, hundreds of thousands of Philadelphians will be met with this bold newspaper ad as the AVMA brings its national convention to their city
There are three things you can do today that will have a big impact:
- Share our ad on Twitter and tag @AVMAVets
- Have your say on social media (not on social media? Try sending this email instead.)
- Make a donation to support our work to end the abuse of animals raised for food
As a veterinarian myself, I don’t believe anyone becomes a vet because they want to hurt animals. But the reality is the AVMA has bowed to the interests of factory farms—and needs to know it has community support to stand up for animals. Thank you for taking action with us this week. And thank you for helping to end the horror of VSD+.
For the animals,

P.S. If you know someone who cares about animals, and would be horrified to learn that the AVMA is enabling the meat and egg industries to roast animals alive—please share this campaign with them today. This week, the animals need everyone on their side!
