It is uniquely challenging to raise two daughters in the ideologically lopsided city of Oakland, California.
Amazingly, even my fourth-grader is tested on her parents’ political preferences, just as she would be in math and grammar. She’d better have the right answers—better according to her teachers that is!
Though the lack of free inquiry on college campuses is better known, K-12 schools struggle with it too.
However, I continue to teach my daughters that is critical to think independently, no matter how adamant people can be. I tell them it’s important to listen and understand other people’s perspectives. But you need not conform to them.

Working at Independent gives me the opportunity to apply the lessons I’ve learned as a mother on a larger scale. Today’s “progressives” call for greater government programming to solve issues in healthcare, housing, education, and more. And many young people feel pressure to conform, if only because the fashionable activists are so loud and insistent.
As opposed to ranting, the Independent Institute calmly pursues solutions that come from its trustworthy, empirical, and peer-reviewed research. Today is my first day working at the Independent Institute. I’m delighted to share with you that I am the new Senior Director of Advancement.
I love that Independent empowers young people to critically examine Big Government “solutions” and inspires them with trustworthy solutions that cherish liberty.
Many young people feel great pressure to conform to the perspectives and demands of a militant Left. Giving young citizens the resources needed to stand against such pressure is what most excites me about working here—and I know this is near and dear to the heart of our founder, David Theroux.
Two great examples are our Love Gov video series and our related website, Catalyst. These give young people access to a perspective of liberty that champions market entrepreneurship and personal responsibility, instead of dependency on government.
I look forward to helping scale up these resources to reach more and more young people.
But I need your help.
During this giving season, would you consider helping us empower young people with a gift of $50, $100, or $250 today?
