As elected officials, we have an obligation to address the gun violence epidemic that is killing Americans at an alarming rate. We have a sacred charge to step up and protect our children, families, and communities.

The statistics and stories of gun violence should shock the conscience. So we are taking action:

House Democrats are working to ban assault weapons designed to inflict maximum carnage out of the hands of criminals — and out of our communities.

Conservatives will try to call this radical. But the simple truth is: It’s not. It does not ban handguns, or guns with hunting and sporting characteristics.

But what this critical, life-saving legislation does is ban weapons of war. Weapons that are used to hunt human beings and inflict violence beyond recognition.

These weapons of war have no place on our streets — not at parades, super markets, movie theaters, places of worship, or schools.
