Dear John,
Many of us around the world are facing rising temperatures and scorching heatwaves, but people forced to flee are the hardest hit by the effects of climate change.
Ardo did not want to leave her village in the Eastern Somali region of Ethiopia. But it had barely rained in months; her cattle were dying, and her children were hungry.
“I can’t count the number of people that were displaced with us. Nearly everyone in the village left.”
Ardo and most of the people in her village are farmers—they walked 260 kilometres to reach a small town near the regional capital. They searched desperately for water and pasture to feed their cattle—but there was nothing.
You may have not yet heard about this emergency, but there is something you can do([link removed]) to help women and families like Ardo.
Ardo and millions of others across Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya are suffering through the worst drought in 40 years. The devastating impact of the climate crisis and rising food prices caused by the war in Ukraine are making the situation much worse.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is on the ground delivering life-saving aid including clean water, emergency shelter kits, soap and other hygiene materials. We are also delivering cash assistance to help families meet rising food costs.
