TESTIMONIO:
Canadian Mining in the Aftermath of Genocides in Guatemala

EDUCATIONAL FACT-FINDING DELEGATION TO GUATEMALA

Saturday, Nov. 5 – Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022
** Trip geared for educators, writers, journalists **
If you are an educator / writer / journalist, and interested in learning more about and writing about the range of issues addressed in TESTIMONIO, please consider joining this trip led by Grahame Russell (Rights Action) and Professor Catherine Nolin (UNBC), editors of the recently published TESTIMONIO.

TRIP ORGANIZER:
As part of his work with Rights Action since 1995, Grahame has planned and carried out dozens of such educational road trips in Guatemala and Honduras.

Learn more:
“What is land? A resource to be exploited? A commodity to be traded? A home to cherish? In Guatemala, a country still reeling from 36 years of US-backed repression and genocides, the Canadian-led, global mining industry cashes in, while acting with near-total impunity.”

COVID-19 MATTERS:
Organizers request participants to be vaccinated. All participants should check their own airlines, and the Guatemalan government’s entry requirements regarding vaccinations. Masking might be required, as determined in-country, in meetings & public spaces.
THEMES & ISSUES:

In our book TESTIMONIO, we draw on over 30 years of direct community support work and community-based research in Guatemala to expose the repressive, corrupt state machinery that benefits the Canadian-led, global mining industry—a profitable juggernaut of exploitation, sanctioned and supported at every step by the Guatemala government and its ‘international community’ partner governments, companies and banks. During this 7-day trip in Guatemala, delegation members will visit and speak with Indigenous and non-Indigenous community defenders in their own communities, who are involved in mining-resistance struggles, as well as with human rights and environmental activists and academics.

The trip will visit some communities profiled in TESTIMONIO and with communities that have recently initiated their own community defense struggles against the continuing onslaught of the global mining industry.

DELEGATION COSTS:

Cost per person, based on group of 6-8: US $1200. Cost covers 8 nights of lodging; 7 days of in-country transportation & fuel (professional driver & van); 2-3 meals/day; trip coordination; guiding & translation; and honorariums for community defenders. Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Guatemala.
