** Westminster Despatches
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Resident,

Our most vulnerable citizens are those who cannot look after themselves - the very young and the very old. It was a pure coincidence that my constituency commitments at the end of last week included visits to a nursery and a care home, seeing first-hand the excellent and loving care and support provided in both situations.

Some of you will be very familiar with Children 1st Nurseries, with their headquarters in Long Eaton and run by the ever-inspiring Margaret Mason OBE. The network of nurseries is growing, with a new one in Oakwood. This also incorporates the new children's charity, ‘The Margaret Mason Children 1st Foundation’, which will provide vulnerable children with access to a nursery place. Whenever I visit a Children 1st nursery I always want to be a child again. The environment created by the dedicated staff is truly inspiring, it is fantastic that the new charity will ensure so many more children get an amazing start in life.

As your MP, I regularly visit care homes across the constituency. My Father lived in a care home for over seven years, so I know first-hand just how important it is for residents to have entertainment on a regular basis. In the same way that constructive play for children helps to develop young minds, having stimulation is just as important for the elderly. Visiting Sandiacre Care Home during their ‘Family Fun Day’ was great. Being such a lovely day, many of the residents were sat in the gardens, being entertained by a very good singer - and of course everyone was singing along and having fun.

Last week I updated everyone on the roll out of the Cost of Living Payment. I thought it would be helpful to highlight that pensioners on low incomes could be eligible for the Cost of Living payments if they claim Pension Credit. According to the latest Government figures, a third of pensioners eligible to claim Pension Credit are missing out by not claiming, which is concerning, as the cost of living continues to rise. However it’s not too late to correct that. Pensioners have until 18th August to put in a claim for Pension Credit and ask for it to be backdated. This will ensure they received £650, half now and half later this year. Should you need further advice on claiming Pension Credit, Age UK are always extremely helpful and supportive and can be contacted on their free advice line on 0800 055 6112, lines are open 8am-7pm, 365 days a year.

Once again, at the opposite end of the age spectrum, as a result of Government funding, Derbyshire County Council has put on a wide ranging of holiday activities for school children. Through the Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF), there are many activities for children and young people in the Easter, summer and Christmas school holidays. The sessions are free for families who claim benefit related free school meals and are provided by a range of local organisations and groups to suit all age ranges. Free places may also be available for children in vulnerable groups, including children with special educational needs or young careers, who are not in receipt of free school meals. A small fee may be applicable for other children. Last summer I visited an activity at West Park and saw just how much every child was enjoying themselves and the benefits they were gaining from mixing with different groups of children, so adding to their skills.

On previous bulletins, I’ve indicated how your friends and family can sign up to my Westminster Despatches, by visiting my website www.maggiethroup.com ([link removed]) . In addition, I am aware that some constituents do not have access to a computer. Therefore, should you know of anyone who would like to receive paper copies on a regular basis, please do let me know their details, including their full name and address.

With best wishes for the week ahead,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
