WHO Declares Public Health Emergency Over Monkeypox Virus

CNBC: The World Health Organization has activated its highest alert level for the growing monkeypox outbreak, declaring the virus a public health emergency of international concern. The rare designation means the WHO now views the outbreak as a significant enough threat to global health that a coordinated international response is needed to prevent the virus from spreading further and potentially escalating into a pandemic. Although the declaration does not impose requirements on national governments, it serves as an urgent call for action. The WHO can only issue guidance and recommendations to its member states, not mandates. Member states are required to report events that pose a threat to global health. The U.N. agency declined last month to declare a global emergency in response to monkeypox. But infections have increased substantially over the past several weeks, pushing WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to issue the highest alert (CNBC). USA Today: U.N. health agency Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement after the WHO’s expert committee couldn’t reach a consensus on whether to apply the highest level of alert to the virus… Ghebreyesus made the decision despite a lack of consensus among experts, calling himself “a tiebreaker.” It was the first time a U.N. health agency chief has unilaterally made such a decision without an expert recommendation (USA Today).

Gavin Newsom Signs Gun Bill Modeled From Texas’ Heartbeat Bill

Fox News: California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a gun control bill into law that will allow private citizens to sue anyone who manufactures, sells, transports or distributes illegal “assault weapons and ghost guns.” The measure was crafted in response to last year’s Texas abortion ban that prohibits the procedure once a heartbeat was detected and allows private citizens to sue physicians, drivers or anyone else who aids a woman in receiving an abortion for $10,000. The California gun law would grant $10,000 in damages per weapon to private citizens who sue. Citizens could also be awarded the same amount if they file a lawsuit against someone who illegally sells firearms to people under 21 years of age (Fox News). National Review: Thirteen abortion bills sponsored by Planned Parenthood are still sitting in the California Senate, one of which would provide funding for out-of-state women’s lodging and transportation to get an abortion in California. Californians will also vote in November on amending the state constitution to include the right to abortion after the Democrat-led state legislature approved a measure to put the amendment on the ballot (National Review).

Biden Prepares for Another $270 Million in Aid to Ukraine

Hill: The Biden administration on Friday rolled out a $270 million security assistance package for Ukraine that includes four more High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and hundreds of tactical drones. White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the package includes $175 million in presidential drawdown authority, which allows the Pentagon to send weapons from its own stockpiles. The remaining $95 million will go toward contracting up to 580 Phoenix Ghost unmanned aerial systems under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. The Pentagon first sent the drones in April, when it included 121 of as part of an $800 million weapons package. The drones are similar to the Switchblade drone, which is a small, rapidly deployable system that can fly short distances and is difficult to detect (Hill). Daily Wire: On Friday, the Department of Defense announced that the Biden administration has sent Ukraine more than $8.2 billion in aid since the start of his administration, including $7.3 billion since Russia invaded in late February (Daily Wire).

Man Who Attacked Rep. Lee Zeldin Thursday Let Go Due to Cashless Bail Laws, Arrested Again Saturday

Fox News: The suspect in the attack of Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., was arrested Saturday afternoon on a federal assault charge, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of New York announced. David Jakubonis is scheduled to make his first court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marion W. Payson Saturday. Zeldin is running for New York governor as a Republican. Jakubonis, 43 of Fairport, New York, has been charged with attempted assault in the second degree on the state level. He was arraigned in Perinton Town Court and released on his own recognizance after the Thursday attack. Before Jakubonis’ release, Zeldin predicted that the suspect would be released. Zeldin has promised to fire district attorneys that do not enforce the law (Fox News). Mike Gallagher: Are you surprised to learn that the would-be attacker, assassin, was quickly released from jail? The man who tried to stab Lee Zeldin last night with a bladed weapon during a campaign stop was released from jail within hours of his arrest on a felony charge, just as Zeldin had predicted (Daybreak Daily). Lee Zeldin: After being charged with a felony for last night’s attack, the man who tried to stab me was instantly released back onto the street due to New York’s insane cashless bail law. We MUST repeal cashless bail in New York (Twitter)!

CA Governor Newsom Runs Ads in Texas Rebuking Governor Abbott’s Gun, Abortion Legislation

Hill: California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is running an ad in three Texas newspapers criticizing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) for his record on guns and abortion. The effort comes after Newsom ran television ads in Florida criticizing that state’s GOP governor, Ron DeSantis. The ads have fed suggestions that Newsom could run for president in 2024. The ads in Texas replace the word “abortion” with “gun violence” and “Texas” with “California” in an effort to use Abbott’s words against him (Hill). NBC: But in a telephone interview with NBC News on Thursday, Newsom said Democrats need to start playing hardball. “I think Democrats have been playing a little soft,” he said. “It’s absolutely true that I’d much rather follow, ‘When they go low, we go high,” he said, referring to a favorite line of former first lady Michelle Obama, “But I also think we’d be completely missing the moment we’re living in. The door’s open. It’s now fair play. The Supreme Court left the door open.” Newsom, who has been on the national radar for years, shot down the speculation and said he wants President Joe Biden to run again in 2024. “In no way, shape or form this has anything to do with that. Period. Full stop. Add six or seven exclamation points,” he told NBC News. Still, he said, he thinks national Democrats have been too slow to recognize the threat Republicans represent, and too willing to let the other side pick the issues and set the terms of the political debate (NBC).

Illegal Immigrant Indicted by Grand Jury for Raping, Impregnating 10-Year-Old in Ohio

CNN: The man accused of raping and impregnating a child who later traveled to Indiana seeking an abortion was indicted by a grand jury Thursday, court documents show. Gerson Fuentes, 27, is charged with two counts of felony rape, according to an indictment handed down by a jury in Franklin County, Ohio. CNN has previously reported that the girl was 10 years old when she sought an abortion, and the indictment says she was 9 years old when the rapes took place, allegedly by Fuentes. Fuentes was arrested July 12 after he spoke to police and confessed to raping the child at least twice, Det. Jeffrey Huhn testified during an arraignment last week. The girl had identified Fuentes as her assaulter six days before his arrest, according to an affidavit (CNN). Daily Wire: The girl’s story made national news after an Indiana abortion doctor told the Indianapolis Star that a child abuse doctor in Ohio had referred the girl to her because Ohio law wouldn’t allow the young girl to get an abortion. Ohio Attorney General David Yost, when previously expressing skepticism about the story, said that if the girl had become pregnant, Ohio law would not prevent her from having an abortion…  Following news of the arrest, Yost released a short statement saying, “We rejoice anytime a child rapist is taken off the streets,” according to the Dispatch. Yost later added that he’s “absolutely delighted that this monster has been taken off the street. If convicted, he should spend the rest of his life in prison” (Daily Wire).

Al Gore Equated Climate Change Deniers to Uvalde Police Officers, Calls to Eliminate Filibuster to Pass Climate Bills

NBC: Former Vice President Al Gore compared climate change deniers to law enforcement officers in Uvalde, Texas, to argue that “inaction” is harming future generations in an interview on NBC. “You know the climate deniers are really in some ways similar to all of those almost 400 law enforcement officers in Uvalde, Texas, who were waiting outside an unlocked door while the children were being massacred. They heard the screams, they heard the gunshots and nobody stepped forward,” said Gore, the environmentalist who was vice president from 1993 to 2001 in the Clinton administration (NBC). New York Post: Gore pointed out the similarity between Congress failing to ban assault weapons with the inability to vote for climate change legislation. ”The same reason we can’t pass legislation to, for example, reinstate the ban on assault weapons is the same reason that we can’t pass climate legislation. We have a minority government. We have the filibuster, still, which ought to be eliminated. We have big money playing much too large a role in our politics, lobbyists for the fossil-fuel industry,” he said (New York Post).

Steve Bannon Found Guilty of Contempt of Court, Faces Jailtime

Yahoo: Shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday, Steve Bannon, the former chief political strategist for President Donald Trump, was found guilty of two counts of criminal contempt stemming from his refusal to cooperate with the congressional committee investigating the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Leaving the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., where his trial had been held, Bannon denounced the Jan. 6 committee — which has held a series of high-profile hearings in recent weeks — as “gutless.” The committee, for its part, praised Bannon’s conviction as “a victory for the rule of law.” It had asked him to testify about his knowledge of the events on Jan. 6, and to produce documents that could shed light on how the violent riot was organized and planned. Bannon was present at meetings at the Willard Hotel on both Jan. 5 and 6 that investigators say were used to plan the “Stop the Steal” rally, which turned violent. He refused to do so, setting up a showdown with the federal government that culminated in Friday’s verdict. But there was little contrition or reflection from Bannon or his supporters, even as sentencing looms in late October (Yahoo). Tucker Carlson: Steve Bannon was subpoenaed by the January 6 committee despite the fact he had literally nothing to do with January 6. We know that because he left the White House three years before it happened, but it didn’t matter. He annoyed the wrong people, so he’s going to jail (Fox News).

Increasing Chinese Aggression Alerts US, Allies in Indo-Pacific

Associated Press: The Chinese military has become significantly more aggressive and dangerous over the past five years, the top U.S. military officer said during a trip to the Indo-Pacific that included a stop on Sunday in Indonesia. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the number of intercepts by Chinese aircraft and ships in the Pacific region with U.S. and other partner forces has increased significantly over that time, and the number of unsafe interactions has risen by similar proportions. “The message is the Chinese military, in the air and at sea, have become significantly more and noticeably more aggressive in this particular region,” said Gen. Milley, who recently asked his staff to compile details about interactions between China and the U.S. and others in the region. His comments came as the U.S. redoubles its efforts to strengthen its relationships with Pacific nations as a counterbalance to China, which is trying to expand its presence and influence in the region (Associated Press). New York Post: Milley, who asked his staff to put together a review of interactions between China, the US and others in the region, will participate in meetings this week with Indo-Pacific chiefs of defense in Sydney, Australia, where the discussions will focus on the growing military threat from China and the need to keep the Pacific free and open (New York Post).

Liz Cheney, Jan 6 Committee Seeks Testimony From Justice Thomas’ Wife

Fox News: Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., suggested on Sunday that the Jan. 6 committee would subpoena Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, if she does not agree to testify willingly. “Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly corresponded with then White House chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Trump lawyer John Eastman, who was pushing this deranged theory,” CNN host Jake Tapper said Sunday (Fox News) Journalist Aaron Rupar: Cheney on Ginni Thomas: “We certainly hope that she will agree to come in voluntarily, but the committee is fully prepared to contemplate a subpoena if she does not” (Twitter). USA Today: Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., also a member of the committee, backed up Cheney’s statements on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “If she has relevant information or investigation, we hope she comes in voluntarily, but if she doesn’t then we should give that serious consideration,” Schiff said of Thomas. “And, yes, I think those that we decide have important enough information should be subpoenaed (USA Today). Daily Mail: In May, Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) told CBS News that they were not looking to subpoena Thomas.’ She was not really a focal point of the broader committee’s work… She just happens to be the wife of a Supreme Court justice,’ Thompson said at the time. If Thomas complies with the committee in some form, she could provide key insights for its next set of hearings – which Cheney announced at the end of the panel’s last series (Daily Mail).
