The unfortunate truth is that the GOP has an extremely cynical vision for our nation’s future, and they’re not even trying to be secretive about their plan to destroy our democracy. Here are just a few of the ways they’re actively trying to render the will of the voters irrelevant as they take more and more power:
• They’re using gerrymandered state legislative majorities to restrict voting rights.
• They’re asking the Supreme Court’s far-right majority to recognize an extreme legal theory that would allow state legislatures to change the outcome of free and fair elections.
• They’re aiming for total GOP control over elections by installing partisan operatives as poll workers and supporting election deniers running for office.
While these actions may seem extreme, they’re the logical next step considering the GOP has been ignoring the will of the voters for years. It’s all part of their plan to undermine and eventually destroy our democracy — and it’s up to us to fight back.
At the NDRC, we’re fighting back on all fronts. This election year we’re targeting races that will be critical to the future of democracy across 17 battleground states. And that’s in addition to the work we and our affiliates are doing to keep up the fight for voting rights in the courts.
