Apply now: High school and college press freedom awards

The Student Press Law Center just opened our award applications. We're looking to recognize one high school program and one college program for their courageous student journalism. Both awards come with cash prizes!

We're looking for student journalists who — in the 2021-22 school year — persisted through tough circumstances to tell a story critically important to their classmates and community. That could mean they took a stand against censorship, pushed back when denied public records or published stories that expose misdeeds, malfeasance or corruption.

The submission deadline is Aug. 15, 2022, so tell your students to apply now!

Spread the Word: Join the John F. Tinker Foundation Essay Contest

Speaking of great opportunities for student journalist to earn recognition... Our friends at the John F. Tinker Foundation have launched a brand new essay competition as a way to inspire young people to engage in complex issues like free speech, economic justice and political polarization.

The contest is open to all students between 10-19 years old. This is a great opportunity for students to gain recognition for their work and win cash prizes. We'd love to see some student journalists enter!

The competition closes on August 10, 2022, so start spreading the word to students who may be interested.

Congratulations to CSPA Executive Director Ed Sullivan on His Retirement!

On Friday, Ed Sullivan retired from more than 40 years heading the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. SPLC joins legions of advisers, students, journalists and educators across the county in congratulating Ed for a job (many jobs) well done. Ed was integral to the creation, evolution and survival of SPLC in its early days and has been a stalwart supporter throughout SPLC's history. The contributions that he has made to the field of student journalism are manifold. Congratulations, Ed, and thank you for your many contributions! We wish you all the best as you move into this next chapter.
